Interview with Bobby R. Woodall

CA: This is a first for me, I just finished reviewing Bobby’s western novel Mercer’s Manor. I have never actually sat down and read a full blown shoot ‘em up kind of western as Bobby calls it but I have watched them on TV when I was smaller. I much rather prefer the books. So here ya go world, put your hands together for Western author Bobby Robert Woodall.

CA: What genre(s) do you write?

BRW: I write westerns

CA: Why do you write the stories that you write?

BRW: I’m from Oklahoma originally but live in Indiana for the last 37 years I used to be a cowboy. In fact when I met my wife I was shoeing horses and mules at a dude ranch (Stupid Charley’s). The name of the ranch is funny as my wife and her college roommate had a lab mouse from college named “Stupid Charley. Anyway, this mouse was all the time running backwards so they just named him Stupid Charley. The two girls wanted to have an adventure and summer was coming up at college, so they decided to look in magazines for dude ranches in Colorado. In the meantime, a buddy of mine and I decided to go to California to become gigolos (we figured we were good lucking dudes) and women would be falling over each other to get at us. ROTFLMAO! As luck would have it, we 2 Romeos were in a bar, got in a brawl and finally deposited at the gutter in front of the bar. The brawl started when my friend Robert, who had a firecracker called a screamer in his back pocket (it was around the 4th of July). One of the patrons at the bar was a drunken Indian who decided to walk around us. In the process of going around us, he spied the firecracker sticking out of Roberts butt pocket. Grinning to himself, the drunk applied the lit end of his cigar to the fuse of the screamer. I was at the far end of the bar trying to put the make on a lovely Indian maiden. I say lovely, because she had at least thee teeth in her mouth; two stained with berry juice and one yellowed and broken plus her hair looked as if it was due an oil change any minute.

All of a sudden, Robert let out a hoop and hollers. Seems as the firecracker was burning its fuse he was being burnt in the butt. He quickly reached behind him to remove the offending screamer, but got burnt; therefore he threw his hand up in the air and hollered. I thought he was making fun of the Indians by doing an impromptu war dance. It looked as if the battle was on. I looked around and hit the first person I saw (a big Indian). My Paw had told me to always get in the first punch. He in return hit me back (it was only right as I had hit him first). After slowing having my facial features rearranged by Hiawatha and moving my nose to where my right ear was, I backed up to a juke box that was blaring out, Honky-tonk Angels! Raising my fists to ward off more blows I looked out of the corner of my eye that was not already closed and saw Robert take on two more of the noble breed. To make a long story even longer, we were thrashed royally or to put it in plain English beaten almost to a pulp and thrown into the gutter. We crawled to our car and the next morning there was a tap on the side window. Bleary eyed I looked out the window and could of sworn it was Wyatt Earp or maybe Wild Bill Hitchcock. This apparition starring back at me was dressed up in full cowboy regalia; chaps, boots, Levis, etc., etc. He even had a handlebar moustache that was stained with tobacco juice. His dishwater hair peeked out from under the biggest Stetson I ever had seen. Rolling down my window a smidge, I asked what he wanted. "You boys shoe horses?" I was raised on a farm so I stated that we did, although I knew Robert was scared of horse. That meant that yours truly would be doing all the work. We worked at the dude ranch I met my wife. I knew her 30 minutes and asked her to marry me. I'll be the 1st to admit I was a tad slow, but I had to know her name first. One has to set his priorities right. We eloped and then started the long saga of the adventures of BobbyRobert!
CA: Who or what was your inspiration for writing?

BRW: Always wanted to be a write, but I had an English teacher in high school tell me, Woodall, you could not put 10 words together to make a proper sentence! Well, Madame, I put over 187,000 words together to make two novels. I find that I can make sense though others may not like it, but I tell them, Eat your heart out! As I mentioned before, hopefully I am not being too redundant, but I like reading. One day I told my wife, Babe, that’s what I call her. All other women are doll! I think I can write as good as these guys. She told me to do it and see. She is my inspiration for without her I would be lost! So I wrote one novel and it got published. I wrote another to prove I was not a flash in the pan and it got published. Hey, I thought to myself. I’m on a roll. Therefore I’m busy writing more; a murder mystery, another western, a children’s book, a horror story and a scary story.

What’s the difference between a horror story and a scary story? In a horror story there’s a lot of fantasy. In a scary story, it is a case of it might or might not happen. I’ve been compared to Louis Lamoure but there are 2 important things about that. First and the most obvious, I’m alive and he isn’t. God rest his soul! Secondly, he takes 3 chapters to describe a blade of grass. To me, a blade of grass is a blade of grass, I describe people. I want people to walk a mile in my boots or at least look at my characters through my one-eye
CA: What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

BRW: I don’t have a schedule as I don’t believe in work. That’s a nasty four letter word I detest. If the mood strikes me I write. Lately the mood has eluded me. Although tomorrow is another day, maybe it’ll return. If it doesn’t, then I’m a realist. I got two novels now; I am satisfied with just having a contented mind.
CA: Your book is about to be sent into the reader world, what is one word that describes how you feel?

BRW: Satisfied and accomplished! You see, I had a horrible auto accident 35 years ago that left me with brain damage (No I’m not a babbling idiot, although my wife would disagree with me sometimes). My car hit two mail boxes, one telephone poll, and rolled end over end five times. I was declared legally “dead” three times. I was in a coma for 47 days. Funny thing though. I did not break a bone in the accident, but after two weeks in the hospitals neurotically unit, I was dropped out of bed and broke my hip socket. Let me tell you the hospital wasn’t safe at all! The doctors told me wife if I survived I would be a vegetable. This carrot not only survived but authored and got published 2 novels. My novels have neither profanity nor graphic sex scenes. The English language is too full of proper words to have to resort to profanity. Also I am not the world’s mommy and daddy. People should learn about sex from their parents.
CA: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

BRW: Eating, sleeping and thinking of what if that happens or what if that over there happens. Life is too short to wallow in self-pity. Of course I did my fair share of holding pity parties for ole Bobby, but then I remembered. Back home in Oklahoma there was a sign that said, I felt sorry because I had no shoes until I met a man with no feet! Sure, I wear a patch, but I’m not blind. I limp somewhat especially when I’m tired, but I am not confined to a wheel-chair. I talk in a slurred tone but at least I’m not mute, although there have been times when my kids and wife wished it to be so. I am considered by Social Security to have Cerebral Palsy and am classified as totally disabled not handicapped. Anytime your cerebrum is damaged the Social Security puts a large umbrella over it and calls the condition Cerebral Palsy.
CA: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

BRW: I have authored two so far. As far as favorite it’s hard to say, depends on the mood I’m in at the present. CLEARWATER is about a serial killer”of the old west whereas MERCER’S MANOR is a post Civil War epic! I like CLEARWATER when I’m feeling hungry for adventure. On the other hand I like MERCER’S MANOR when I feel in a nostalgic or history type mode. I have a sequel to MERCER’S MANOR in the back of my mind. Bringing it forward is another matter altogether.
CA: Do you tend to base your characters on real people or are they totally from your imagination?

BRW: They are from my imagination plus real life experiences! I ask my friends if I can use their name in a story and they say yes, they even go so far as to tell me what character they want to be. Writing is a form of therapy. One can vent out his anger, relive a fantasy or get rid of frustrations. It's wonderful to be alive at this time and in this very moment! My wife says, Bobby, you’re full of it as a Christmas turkey. Maybe so, but I’m writing it all down and getting paid for it!
CA: How can a reader contact you or purchase your books?

BRW: They are not only in print but electronically too. They can be purchased at the following web sites:

Now that is what I call an interesting interview! I love the old Clint Eastwood spaghetti western movies but I can't say this is a genre I read.

You are a remarkable person and I love your sense of humor. After everything you have experienced, you truly have shown that you can do what you want if you put your mind to it.

Have you ever thought of writing a book about your life?

Anonymous said...

Doll, thank you very much for your kind comments. I must point out that I have overcome many hardships or obstacles, but it's not over yet. Funny, but one must be "DEAD" to become famous and I hope I still got a long ways to go! I am no different than others. I eat the same, put on my britches two legs at a time (the exception is my brother, who only has one-leg). He & I try to get FREE food at Long John Silvers (after all he has a peg-leg & I got a patch, therefore, we are Pirates!) I also hurt the same. Ole Bobby can sling snot with the best of 'em! Again, my many thanks to you! Bobby

Bobby..I loved your interview. I agree...you just need to write an autobiography. I`d love to read that one. You are such an interesting person. You are so down to earth..that`s what I love about you..You tell it like it it. Nothing phoney about you. Keep writing .......Bonnie

Anonymous said...

Doll, I thank you for the gracious comments. I think that Raven, you & I ought to form a mutual admiration society! ROTFLMAO!!! I maybe down to earth, but hopefully not in the earth. So don't rush out and get me any lillies. Sort of reminds me of an undertaker talking to ole Bobby once, "Don't worry any Bobby. I'll be the last to let you down or throw dirt on you"! I don't know about an autobiography. I'm just a simple man doing simple things in a complex world! BobbyRobert

Congratulations on for being another step closer to fame. I love you! Babe

HI Bobby, I was about to post the comment from your wife but I see you've already got it :)

Yep Crstal, I finally figured this out. She (my wife) can be stopped. She loves me more and more each day. I can't help but be wonderful married to such a truthful woman! ROTFLMAO!!! Bobby

I must agree with ravenn Bobby...
A very interesting Interview indeed! Reading through it I had
flash-backs of watching many
Westerns on TV with my Dad, who
loved Cowboy anything, even though
he had 4 daughters. Although we lived in NY most of my life, since
I moved to AZ in 1995--I am reminded in this state of the
famous John Wayne movies--And I
loved Clint Eastwood. There are millions of books on the market,
but Westerns are different, and
are a great reminder of history.
Great Interview!

Doll, thanks for the very informative and gracious interview. I think westerns are going to make a come-back. We have a TV channel that sometimes shows Clint Eastwood movies all night. Well your truly camps out in the family room, turns the TV on, and begin filling my mind with all sorts of western lore. The only time I stop is , to go to the bathroom, grab a Cherry-Vanilla diet Dr. Pepper & go out on the porch to smoke my pipe. I think that Raven, Bonnie, You & I are on our way to froming mutual admiration society for me. Because I thought of it first I'll be president of course! ROTFLMAO!!! Seriously, I thank you for you astute observation and kind remarks!!! BobbyRobert

Anonymous said...

HI Bobby!! Glad you liked both of your reviews. Honestly, I would rather read about them than watch them on TV. But I do wish you luck in the next books that you get sent out into the world! I noticed that you have a few things in the works now...so good luck!

Considering that I always wanted to be a cowboy and my name is Charlie, I'm already interested in Bobby's writing. ;)

Though I'm not a mouse, I DO do stupid things from time to time.

Best of luck, Bobby!

I guess I should have worded that differently and said autobiography and not story of your life LOL.

I'm up for a mutual admiration society! Bonnie, Geri, Crystal, Yvonne, Babe and I can camp out with you and we can have a western weekend moviethon!

I love pirates! I gotta tell ya, I loved that Long John Silver's story! That cracked me up!

Your humor is priceless! A book of tales is needed!

All the best to you and yours and again much success!

My kind a guy... life may be hard, but it could have been a hell of a lot worse, right?

It sure could be worse friend. My Paw once told me things could be worse, so I waited around and sure enough they got worse!!! ROTFLMAO!!! Seriously though. I've been to the bottom of the barrel(DYING)so everything is up to me. Isn't life grand! With friends like those that have commented about my writing and novels, I want to thank you from the very bottom of my heart. Remember, you will always meet people in better circumstance than you are in presently, but you will never meet a person who is better than YOU! BobbyRobert

I know a tall tale when I read one, Bobby, and this takes the cake.If your novels are as good as your interview, you should be a smash hit!!!Honestly, I love to read Westerns and tried to write them, but I don't know enough of the language, mannerisms, and just plain old grit. But hey, you do!(I do believe your story about your accident, though.)As long as you're having fun, that's all that counts. Me, too, I'm not taking myself or anything else very seriously, unless I must. Celia Yeary

Bobby, you are a pistol... I too am handicapped with a RARE genetic condition called "MARFAN SYNDROME", but was only diagnosed a few years ago, but, I ain't dead yet... My favorite books (among many different types) are Westerns and look forward to checkin' yours out. I have been in Az, for 30 odd years, but grew up in Mo. and around Chicago, so I've rode everything from "Bull" to hogs...had my own entertaining bar-fights, and understand what "LIVING" is all about, good-luck to you!...AZ. Bobby ~ Your interview was great! I agree wholeheartedly with these other comments, that you have done a wonderful job. I've already begun reading Clearwater too. I also remember well the old westerns of the Silver Screen, the common Saturday afternoon matinees that even we Canadian city folks could not miss. Television also brought forth their great episodes and even today I think the old Western sagas continues to live on. Louis Lamour, Zane Grey ... yes! among my favorites too!

Bobby,
You are the kind of man one could spend long afternoons on the front porch with and never get bored. Just reading your interview brings back memories of sitting on the front porch back at the farm as a child and listening to all the tall tales being told. The funny thing is, as I believe in your case the stories are very tall but not so much tales. I bet you would have been a riot in your younger days. As for the trials you have endured I am reminded of the somg "You can't keep a good man down". The good lord must have known you just needed a little more time to become that good man.

I like your style Bobby R Woodall !

Coming from Australia, I had in fact never read a 'cowboy' book until recently, when a friend introduced me to Kinky Freidman... but that is another whole story !

Life is fascinating isn't - I had a friend who had a brain injury after a car accident. At 50 years of age, he then went on the become an artist - a painter with great style and flair...

He introduced me to the saying:

"As you go through life, make this your goal:
Keep your eye on the doughnut and not on the hole."

Hi Bobby, thanks for inviting me to read your interview. I seriously enjoyed it. I have to agree with the majority here, your sense of humor is wonderful. I think its awesome that you have that wonderful sense of humor after coming through the tragedies you have endured. Hang on to that. I enjoy reading your posts and although I'm not a western reader I may have to pick up one of your books especially the one you mentioned about a serial killer in the old west. I'm an action reader and that really sounds like it might be right down my ally. Believe it or not I have a novel started about a young woman going through life during the Oklahoma land rush. Pretty funny I guess since I don't read Westerns. Anyway, keep up the good work and keep entertaining us, we all love it.

BobbyRobert,
I write too (no novels yet). I understood the things you said about writing when the mood strikes and about it being therapy.
When the desire to write is there, the process is release to be sure! I am quite honored to get to know you. You're fascinating to me. Guess what else we seem to have in common? I was born and raised in Columbus, IN!
God bless you in your endeavors, BobbyRobert!

Your interview is great. But, are you sure you shouldn't be writing comedy instead. You are very funny!
You have a knack for being able to tell a story in such a way that it comes over being comedic. Good luck in all your writings. No matter what you decide to write.

I love the humor you input into your words, still bringing out the visual through your written text.
Your style speaks the basis of the Man writing the story, His thoughts, emotions, strenghts & weakness. You have brought them all to life within written words. Kudos, My Friend !

Best of Luck with getting published !

It is I, Kathy, who finally figured it all out! My favorite writer was Louis Lamoure,, I was born in Montana in 1952 and we were behind the rest of the county. So, I loved those times and those stories. Your interview is so good, I adore a good sense of humor, we get through life this way in a positive, uplifting way.
It is nice to meet someone real and honest.

This interview was a delight to read! You obviously have a great sense of humor and have overcome obstacles that other people would let bring them down. You're my kind of people.

You've led a fascinating life and I'm sure it reveals itself in your novels. I'm sure there's lots of stories left in you. It's be a shame to keep them all hung up in there.

Hi Bobby,
Great interview!
You've had a very interesting life, and I'm sure the ups and downs is what made you such a character, and so entertaining.

I live in Arizona because I grew up in front of the TV with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, etc, and was fasinated with the scenery, but also their sidekick's humorous personalities.

I think you found your nitch! Now I can't wait to read your books!

Your interview alone tells your life story. Which is great because not many people can do that. Your reason for surviving such a horrible car accident speaks for itself in your writing talent. A wonderful gift that you have given to the world. My grandmother always said "Things happen for a reason" Your writing talent is the reason you survived. You are a great human being. Keep that writing star shining always.

Ok new friend- I have done as you asked- and yes indeed you have had many true-life adventures that would make a heck of a book! I can say this too- you have not let your diagnosis (I hate that label)or the comments of some sour-puss English teacher keep you from doing just what you set out to do! I hope my sons can do the same- as one has been diagnosed with autism- and to me - he has taught more than I ever could! I might take a peek at your work very soon. Take care! Queenie

Hi BobbyRobert,
You are a phenomenal person and one in which I'm happy to be acquainted with. It's funny b/c I had read ur interview b4 and there were things that I learned this time around that I completely missed the first time. So I'm happy that i came back to read it again.
You know it is said that there are really only two kinds of people in the world. Those who view the glass as half empty or half full. You are certainly the latter. You have such a way with words and It's just amazing the gifts that God has put in you. And the way that ur able to coin a phrase is simply remarkable.[Proves that ur teacher didn't have a clue as to what she was talking about.]
There are no words to describe what an inspiration you've been to me BobbyRobert and I know that you will touch many lives in a positive way. May God continue to bless you and use you for many more years to come. Take care my dear sweet wonderful friend and whatever you do, don't you ever stop writing! Love Ennid

I've always wondered what would it be like to be a novelist.
You make it seems like being a novelist is so easy.
You are very detail oriented.
You give importance to those or what might interest you in your surroundings.
As I look at your experiences in life.
The way you laugh at your mistakes.
The more you mention about how your wife made an incredible effect on your success.
I pause and say, "this guy actually knows what he's talking about, bless his soul."
You inspire me Mr. Woodall.
I hope one day, I'd be sitting next to you in an Authors' Convention.

I just finished reading your interview and feel now as if I have known you my whole life. You have lived what i would call a very interesting life by the stories you have told in your interview. I would love to be able to sit down and write a story but when i try the words seem to like you say elude me. I have written several poems and plan to have a book published soon. And like you I was in a very bad car wreck 33 yrs ago and spent 32 days in the hospital with doctors and nurses and family wondering if I was going live and ever be able to walk again. i was only nine yrs old then and my mother was killed in that wreck. Nuff said I hope to get to read your books sometime. take care my friend. James
